9 Photos of Cheap Hotel Rooms in Malaysia
Ok, it’s been a while but here’s another series of photos of hotel and guesthouse rooms we stayed in during our time in Malaysia. We had a great time in Malaysia but it’s not my favorite country in South East Asia. I’m not sure why because traveling is easy and the food is awesome. It’s just missing something for me.
Taking photos of hotel rooms in low light
Most of the photos turned out great but sometimes it would’ve been nice to have a tripod. I decided not to take it when we left on our trip around the world because we travel light and a tripod just didn’t seem like a good idea. My Pentax 645z performs great in low light so I always manage to take the shot I want, even at night.

How cheap are hotel rooms in Malaysia?
Compared to other South East Asian countries, Malaysia is a little bit more expensive but still a good budget destination if you stay away from popular places like the Perenthian Islands and Tioman. We weren't able to find a cheap place to stay there, so we didn’t go... Probably because we were traveling in high season.
On the mainland you'll have no problem finding cheap accommodation. We always found nice cheap rooms even though they were smaller than what you would get in Thailand for the same price for example and often without a window. Airbnb is also definitely something to explore in Malaysia. We stayed in a big apartment with a view on the Petronas Towers for $28 per night at the end of our trip there. We had the whole place to ourselves.
Kuala Lumpur
We stayed in Kuala Lumpur on five different occasions. It sort of became our home base while traveling between Malaysia and Indonesia. The rooms were good but definitely less value for money than Thailand or Laos for example. You’ll pay more for a room with a window and even then the window sometimes looked out on a common area so you can’t really open the curtains without feeling watched… like this one…

Hotel Paloma Inn • $20 / night
Our second stay in KL we decided to pay a little bit more for a room. Again, good but not great. The room felt damp so being able to open the window was great.
Zen Rooms Sahabat Guesthouse • $20 / night
We really liked Sahabat Guesthouse. The location is great and they offer breakfast so we stayed there again only this time in a more expensive room with a big window and some more privacy. Definitely a good choice and the value for money was pretty good.
Hotel Signature International @ Pudu • $20 / night
Both Signature International and Adya are basic but nice hotels to stay in for a few nights in Kuala Lumpur. The location of both is good but not great and everything is clean and comfortable. The only thing I didn’t like about these rooms is that they don’t look good on photo because they lack personality. Haha…

Wow, this was a nice find on Airbnb. A whole apartment on the 30th floor looking out on KLCC Park and the Petronas towers. We stayed here for a week preparing for Australia…
Ipoh
Yy Residence • $12 / night
Definitely the most photogenic room of all. Ipoh is a town worth visiting for a few nights. Most people skip it but you really shouldn’t. Try the famous white coffee (sweet ice coffee) in a bag and visit the Kek Long Tong temple… pretty cool!
Georgetown
Simcity Stay • $24 / night
Perfect example of an overpriced room. No window, cramped and we were stupid enough to stay 4 nights here… Anyway, it’s actually not THAT bad but you really appreciate space and being able to open a window a lot more...
Malacca
My Friends Guesthouse • $18 / night
Interesting setup here but not bad at all. Everything looked new and they were still paining and renovating. They also have a bunch of cubicle rooms without windows… not sure if you want those, though…
Alright, that’s it for Malaysia. Not the most memorable country for me but when it comes to photographing rooms I definitely have some favorites here!
