How Lasers Changed My Life

Boom, it’s done. I can see the world again. Wow, what a relief! Lasers rule! OK, you probably have no idea what’s going on so let me explain:

It’s only three months before we leave on our epic journey and we’re planning and preparing more and more but there was one thing that kept me worrying: traveling for such a long time with contact lenses.

I mean, I’ve been wearing contacts for ages and never had any problems but there are some annoying aspects, especially when traveling to places that are a bit more off the grid like when I was in Congo.

  • Carrying spare lens liquid
  • Carrying spare contacts
  • Always taking glasses just in case
  • Keeping everything clean because you don’t want a serious eye infection in the middle of nowhere
  • Always remembering to take your contacts and spares EVERYWHERE
  • Taking contacts in carry-on luggage in case your checked in luggage disappears
  • Being careful when swimming AND showering

And the list goes on. Because I've never traveled for more than 3 or 4 weeks, it was never a big issue but now…? I was trying to find out how much lens liquid I should take. Can I buy it anywhere? Will a different brand burn my eyes? How many spare contacts should I take? 6 months? 12 months? How will I keep everything clean and hygienic for such a long time?

And my biggest worry: Will I be able to take a nap on long bus or train rides? I’ll have to take of my contacts every time because if I don’t my eyes get as dry as the dessert sand when I wake up, not to mention the hygiene aspect.

Because of that long list of worries I decided to get laser treatment. I thought about it before but as a photographer my eyes are..., well, just as important as anybody else’s so I always was scared to go for it. Until last week.

I had a LASIK treatment last week and I couldn’t be happier with the result. I wish I've had it done years ago. Perfect vision and no crap to worry about anymore when we leave next year. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in preparation for our journey; altough an expesive one. And most important:

I CAN TAKE NAPS WHERE AND WHEN I WANT NOW!
