Hunting For The Best Food in Thailand

People ask us why we want to leave to travel the world. For me it’s about three things: exploring cultures, photography… and food! And what can I say? We both like it hot and we love curries, rice and noodles. Even at home we eat Asian or Thai food once every week and Joanna loves my green curry better than the ones she had in Thailand (I don’t agree by the way). So, whenever we’re headed for Thailand, we know it’s going to be all about food at least three times a day as we love to hunt for awesome local restaurants and food. This is our top 3 of the best food in Thailand from our last trip.

Tom Yum Goong at Pe’aor - Bangkok

I read an article about this little restaurant before we left and when someone says they might have the best Tom Yum Goong in Bangkok, well, we just can’t resist to try it out. The restaurant was difficult to locate but that was mainly because our navigation app pointed us one block further than where it actually is. If you can’t find it, just ask around and show the name on your phone, everybody knows it.

We arrived in the middle of the afternoon and it was packed with locals. A group of school girls was sharing an enormous bowl of Tom Yum and at the next table an older man was tackling the same sized bowl on his own. And damn, it looked good!

The menu had both pictures and English writing so it was easy to navigate. We both ordered a version of their famous Tom Yum Goong and we must admit that it was delicious. Shrimp heads must have been simmering for ages in that broth because it was packed with flavor and the home made iced teas are a god-sent refreshment in the sweltering Bankokian heat. When the bill came, smiles appeared on our faces as we just had to pay a measly 200 baht (around $6) for the two of us.

Street Food in Yaowarat Street - Bangkok

It's not a big secret: Bangkok is street food heaven and everyone making a list on the best street food in Thailand adds this awesome city. If you want cheap, delicious food every day of the week, this is the place to be. The only problem you might encounter is that there's just way too much to choose from, especially when going to Yaowarat street in Chinatown.

We always end up taking a long time walking around and being indecisive but we can recommend the seafood, pork and a simple plate of Chinese noodles. And just because it’s not “a hidden gem” and everybody knows about it, doesn’t mean you don’t have to go there anymore…

Khao Soi at Aroon Rai – Chiang Mai

Until our last trip, we’ve never had tried Khao Soi and that’s remarkable as it is Northern Thailand’s most famous dish; a Burmese influenced coconut soup topped off with crispy fried noodles. It was in the top three of our food bucket list and we agreed it would be the first dish to look for when we arrived by night train in Chiang Mai.

If you check the web for the places to eat Khao Soi, you end up with a list of a dozen restaurants, all claiming to have the best Khao Soi in Chiang Mai. One of those restaurants is Aroon Rai and it happened to be just around the corner of our guest house. Well, ain't that convenient?!

The restaurant doesn’t look very special: a large, open ground floor with a dozen tables spread around with plastic chairs. In front of the kitchen a sign that says “Original Aroon Rai’s Curry Take Home Ready to Eat”. Apart from that it doesn't look like anything special. Then again, we know never to judge a Thai restaurant by its appearance.

We didn’t need a menu. Our taste buds just wanted one thing:

“Two Khao Soi, please.”

Just five minutes later two bowls of Khao Soi arrived and what we got was delicious. This coconut and curry flavored soup instantly became one of Joanna’s favorites. The crispy noodles on top definitely add something extra to the dish. We came here again a few times after that and it was delicious and cheap every time. Around 200 baht for the two of us every meal .This little restaurant in Chiang Mai has to be on every best food in Thailand list!
