Sony A7S III | A Camera for the New Generation 2021

OK, OK, don’t buy the Sony A7S III just yet. Read this first. Maybe also watch my video and then decide but… I’m convinced that for some of you, it’s the perfect camera! Probably the best camera to buy in 2021. Last year, I decided to invest in a new camera system, after having used a Pentax system for 5 years. I bought the Canon R5 and that was a mistake. I’ve used it for a few months and I realized it just didn’t work for me.

So, then I bought the Sony A7S III –my first Sony ever– and I couldn’t be happier now. It’s the perfect camera for me right now. Is it for you too? Well, let me explain who I think the Sony A7S III is for.

I graduated from photography college in 2009 and even though I had filmmaking classes, I was primarily a photographer for years. Only recently, since a year or two, I’ve started to get into filmmaking again and I love it. That’s also why I decided to invest in a new camera system. The Pentax shot awful video.

I had my eye on two cameras: The Sony A7S III and the Canon R5. Now, being a photographer first for years, I was convinced that the Canon R5 would be the one for me. It’s more focused on photography but it does video really well too. But it has some problems. The overheating, while it’s improved, is still there and the video files are pretty much impossible to edit unless you’re one of the lucky ones to have one of the new M1 Macs.

I always ran into the limitations and it slowed down my workflow. But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad camera. It’s an excellent camera! It just doesn’t work for me and my workflow. It’s as simple as that!

The thing is, I’ve been working with cameras professionally for more than ten years and so much has changed. Ever since digital photography arrived, the world of photography and filmmaking has changed, evolved and grown. There are so many possibilities now. A whole new generation of photographers and filmmakers are killing it... content creators.

The Sony A7S III is perfect for content creators

What I mean by that is that the Sony A7S III just works in a content creation workflow. It’s a camera that does everything a content creator wants. Super reliable photography and video. It’s designed for a new generation of artists because a lot of us work at a faster pace. That’s just how it is and it seems like Sony gets that. I love taking this camera everywhere I go because it motivates me to create something… anything.

But the Sony A7S III is not for everyone. It’s an expensive camera first of all. It’s targeted at a professional audience first but of course, if you have the money and you fit in that audience, you won’t regret buying this camera. And that’s also exactly my point here. The Canon R5 could also be the perfect camera for you. It just depends on what you expect from a camera and what you’re going to do with it.

And I hear some of you think: What about the megapixels? It has only 12! Well… just watch this video…

It’s again a matter of matching the right camera with the right photographer/filmmaker. And I come from a medium format system. I had 51 megapixels available. Having a lot of megapixels has a lot of advantages but not everybody needs that many. I won’t use the Sony A7S III for a big photography assignment where they expect me to make large prints. But that’s not my core business right now. The Sony covers 90% of what I need right now and for the 10% that’s left… I’ll just have to use another camera. Maybe the perfect camera doesn’t exist after all… ;-)
