Canon EOS R5: Sell everything to buy one?

The Canon EOS R5 specs look amazing and it seems like most of it is real so far. Now, is this the time to switch from whatever system you have to the Canon R5? I’ve been using a Pentax 645z since 2016 but there’s a problem. It shoots poop video and I’m trying to get into videography more and more…

Canon EOS R5 vs M50?

I did buy a Canon M50 to cover the video part of my work and while it’s great, it’s not perfect. I’m going to need something better soon. It doesn’t shoot C-LOG for example and I would really like to learn more about color grading and things like that. The Canon M50 is also not great in low late. However, that’s not a big problem at the moment.

But anyway, my Pentax is getting old and the M50 lacks a few features so should I sell everything to buy the Canon R5? If everything is true about the Canon EOS R5 then I can get everything I want in one camera system and I’d really like that. I’m a photography minimalist. I don’t like to have a ton of gear laying around.

Canon R5 Specs

The only downside to all this is that I just love medium format. So, I would have to give up the medium format that I love for a future proof mirrorless camera system that has everything else I want. So, let’s take a look at the specs of the EOS R5.

Full Frame Sensor

A 45mp sensor. Perfect! I have 50mp now and that's all I need for my printing. The only problem is that I would go from medium format to full frame and it doesn’t seem like a big difference but if you’ve ever tried medium format, you know it is a big difference. I just love that medium format look.

Is it a mirrorless 5D Mark 4?

This is important for me. My 5D mark 3 was my favorite camera for many years! I used it for many assignments, many projects and I was great to shoot video with. If they can put everything that camera had and more in the R5… wow!

Something that always bothered me with mirrorless was that it’s a bit slow. Electronic viewfinders, slow autofocus. Slower than a dslr for sure. I always had a reason not to go for mirrorless. But if this really is a mirrorless 5D then it might be the perfect camera for me. I will abandon my medium format system that I love so much…

8K video

I don't need 8K but I would like to try more 4K. My M50 has cropped 4K and it’s just annoying. The autofocus is also pretty much useless while recording in 4K. So, if the Canon EOS R5 really has full sensor 4K and 8K… well, that’s amazing, right!?

More RF lenses announced

Yes, the lenses are expensive but we all know that Canon produces some epic glass and they’ve announced more RF lenses. It’s good to know that all the lenses I need will be available.

What else

There's IBIS which is great. Dual card slots. My Pentax has dual SD slots so I hope at least the same. CF Express would great. Then maybe 4K at 120 fps? Again, I don't need it but it would be fun to experiment with.

Conclusion

So, that sounds great right, the Canon R5. I know, but what should I do?

Should I hold on to my Pentax 645z and all the lenses. More than $10,000. The best camera I've ever and then just buy a cheaper camera for video–more capable of shooting video than the M50 so I can step it up.

Or, should I just ‘invest in the future’ as they say and start clean with a new mirrorless system that shoots great video and stills. Sell everything for the Canon EOS R5...? You tell me... I could use some advice!
